En tentant de saisir les relations écologiques des sociétés, l’écologie sociale contemporaine a développé un vaste appareil théorique et analytique qui rend visible la matérialité de l’économie capitaliste contemporaine en tant que métabolisme social. L’écologie sociale propose une conception élargie du procès économique qui ajoute à l’analyse des rapports de production et de consommation, celle des relations extractives et dissipatives à la frontière avec la nature. L’article présente ces outils analytiques et propose, à partir de travaux antérieurs, un idéaltype du métabolisme social propre au capitalisme en général et à sa forme avancée. Finalement, l’article souligne comment la sociologie dialectique pourrait contribuer à faire de l’écologie sociale contemporaine une théorie critique plus complète des rapports sociétaux du capitalisme à la nature.
