Abstract
Granville est un port terre-neuvier en plein essor au xviiie siècle. En période de belligérance, la pêche de la morue à Terre-Neuve est interrompue, par conséquent les Granvillais s’adonnent à la guerre de course. Tandis qu’une majorité d’armateurs attend patiemment le retour de la paix pour reprendre leurs activités habituelles, une poignée d’hommes particulièrement entreprenants se lance régulièrement et intensément dans l’activité corsaire. Qui sont ces hommes ? Sont-ils tous des armateurs morutiers ? Le font-ils par nécessité ? L’activité corsaire est-elle réellement une activité de substitution ? L’exemple granvillais démontre le contraire. Ceux qui se lancent dans la guerre de course semblent plutôt céder à une tentation exacerbée du risque, associée au goût d’entreprendre.
