Abstract

Based on a corpus of 75 studies published over the last 5 decades, this scoping review delivers a descriptive and analytical account of ageism in marketing. The literature reviewed highlighted the presence of different manifestations of ageism (non-, under- and mis-representation) across all marketing functions, especially in advertising and product offering. Studies also reported on the marketing and societal causes and consequences of ageism in the field and proposed internal and external solutions to foster more age-inclusive marketing practices. This research equips managers and policy makers with a better understanding of this issue worldwde and provides a range of recommendations to address it. Finally, it identifies areas related to ageism in marketing that warrant further investigation.
