Artykuł jest polemiką z tezą Simona Estoka, wedle którego ekofobia aktywizuje postawy antyśrodowiskowe i podsyca wrogość do natury. Autorka stawia tezę, że we współczesnych amerykańskich horrorach eko-gotyckich ekofobia pracuje na rzecz „ponownego zaczarowania” natury i przywrócenia jej sprawczości. Horrory eko-gotyckie są analizowane w kontekście hipotezy ekofobii Estoka, roślinnego nawiedzenia Matthew Wynn Sivilsa i teorii abiektu Julii Kristevej. Autorka dokonuje rozróżnienia pomiędzy pojęciem eko-gotyku a pojęciem eko-horroru (a także horroru ludowego). W filmach należących do tego drugiego podgatunku natura zwraca się przeciwko ludzkości w rewanżu za degradację środowiska. W podgatunku eko-gotyku nie pojawia się wątek „zemsty” natury, a świat wegetatywny ewokuje nastrój niesamowitości i Kantowskie doświadczenie wzniosłości. Zdaniem autorki gotyk (w idiomatycznej „leśnej” wersji) stanowi fundament amerykańskiej tożsamości.
