La baisse de la fertilité des sols combinée aux faibles restitutions des exportation des nutriments par les récoltes sont à l’origine de la baisse de la production agricole au Burkina Faso. Les fertilisants issus de l’activation du biochar, sous-produit de tiges de cotonnier pyrolyses, a été comparé à la microdose et la pratique vulgarisée des engrais minéraux NPK et urée lors d’une expérimentation en milieu paysan à l’ouest du Burkina Faso. Un dispositif en blocs randomisés a été installés chez deux producteurs-expérimentateurs pratiquant la rotation coton-maïs. Chaque producteur représentait un type de sol. Les traitements comparés étaient composés de : la pratique vulgarisée (T1), la microdose (T2) et l’apport du biochar-SRF (T3) répétés quatre (04) fois chez chaque producteur. L’efficacité des traitements a été déterminée sur les paramètres agronomiques et pédologiques. Les meilleures croissances des plants ont été observées avec les traitements ayant reçus du biochar et la microdose. Les meilleurs rendements ont été obtenus avec les mêmes traitements. Des effets positifs du traitement biochar-SRF ont été observés sur les paramètres de sols tels que la CEC, MO et pH impactant positivement la fertilité globale du sol avec un effet prononcé sur le sol ferrugineux lessive à taches et concrétions. Par conséquent, le biochar-SRF peut être vulgarisé comme une alternative durable à la fertilisation classique.
