Abstract
Au milieu du xxe siècle, une crise socioéconomique peu connue s’est produite dans l’oasis andin de San Pedro d’Atacama, au Nord du Chili. Nous proposons que cette crise de l’industrie minière du soufre éclaire le conflit social et temporel provoqué par la rencontre interculturelle d’une nouvelle forme de temporalité et de nouveaux rapports sociaux imposés par l’expansion capitaliste dans la région. Sur la base d’archives de presse et de rapports gouvernementaux portant sur deux camps miniers, Purico et Vilama/Polán, nous analysons un processus fondamental de l’histoire récente du désert d’Atacama. Cette crise nous permet d’examiner l’impact d’un événement matérialisé dans l’espace andin. Il s’agit des conséquences d’un régime de vie et de travail marqué par des conflits sociaux et des relations asymétriques entre les travailleurs autochtones Lickan-antay et les capitalistes miniers étrangers. Ainsi, nous discutons les nuances d’une crise économique en tant qu’événement historique, témoignage des impacts générés par l’irruption de l’expansion capitaliste et de l’exploitation minière de haute altitude dans les territoires andins autochtones du Nord du Chili.
