Abstract
Abstract Two experiments were conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and the standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of phosphorus (P) in oat groats fed to growing pigs. In Experiment 1, a total of 18 ileal-cannulated barrows (50.7 ± 3.1 kg) were assigned to one of three dietary treatments, providing six observations per treatment. The three diets consisted of a wheat basal diet and the basal diet + 46.5% oat groats, with or without multi-enzyme supplementation. All diets contained 0.3% titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. A low-protein diet was used to quantify endogenous AA losses. The ileal digestibility of AA in oat groats was determined using the difference method. Each experimental period lasted 7 days, including the first 5 days for adaptation and the last 2 days for ileal digesta collection. Data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED procedure in SAS. Results indicated that multi-enzyme supplementation decreased (P < 0.05) the SID of AA in oat groats fed to growing pigs. In Experiment 2, 22 barrows (12.2 ± 0.85 kg) housed in metabolism crates were allotted to either a corn-soybean meal basal diet or the basal diet + 40% oat groats. The digestibility of P in oat groats was also determined using the difference method. Pigs were fed their experimental diets for 12 days, including 7 days for adaptation and 5 days for total collection of feces. The P digestibility of the corn-soybean meal basal diet was greater (P < 0.05) than that of the 40% oat-containing diet. The STTD of P in oat groats fed to nursery pigs was 33.6%. In conclusion, the SID of AA was lower in oat groats with multi-enzyme supplementation. The SID values for lysine, methionine, and threonine in oat groats without multi-enzyme supplementation were 72.7, 89.4, and 69.4%, respectively. The STTD of P in oat groats fed to nursery pigs was 33.6% and the standardized total tract digestible P in oat groats was determined at 1.31 g/kg.
