Depuis 2008, le laboratoire La création sonore : cinéma, arts médiatiques, arts du son a multiplié les façons d’écouter le cinéma québécois. D’abord, l’organisation d’ateliers de maître avec les artisans de la bande sonore a permis de découvrir une posture plaçant l’écoute et le bricolage au centre du processus de création. Ensuite, l’analyse des discours et des pratiques, notamment celles de l’Atelier de conception et de réalisation sonores de l’ONF (1971-1980), a permis d’inscrire les pratiques québécoises de conception sonore dans une histoire culturelle de l’écoute filmique. Puis, l’écoute des films de Fernand Bélanger, Sylvain L’Espérance, Clément Perron, etc., a révélé une diversité de rapports entre le son et l’image, et des relations entre innovations techniques et imagination sociale. Enfin, des membres du laboratoire ont repris les méthodes des artisans québécois du son dans leurs projets de recherche-création, ouvrant ainsi l’espace de la recherche sur une tradition sonore encore méconnue, inouïe.
