Abstract
Un dépouillement systématique de la collection Deloynes, conservée au département des Estampes de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, a relevé un ensemble de textes de critique d’art des années 1770 et 1780 mettant en scène des personnages fictifs de spectateurs étrangers au Salon de l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. Récupérant un archétype littéraire à la mode, les salonniers l’utilisent pour se constituer un éthos qui contribue à leur positionnement dans les polémiques qui agitent le discours sur l’art. L’étude de ces brochures révèle que le spectateur étranger est généralement utilisé dans le but d’affirmer son patriotisme, défendant ou prétendant défendre les peintres et les institutions artistiques royales, à la suite d’une controverse majeure de 1769.
