Abstract
In her retelling of Chaucer’s ‘Man of Law’s Tale’ in her collection Telling Tales, Patience Agbabi comments on what Paul Gilroy calls ‘civilizationism’ in the British literary public, as the narrator of her tale expresses not only xenophobia and racism but a principled secularism along the lines of the ‘New Atheists’. The text demonstrates a productive ambivalence about the double-bind of xenophobia and globalising forces in the UK, especially when they coalesce around religious and secular institutions. More to the point, this ambivalence responds to the potential misreading of Telling Tales, that would reduce it to an uncritical celebration of British cosmopolitan multiculturalism.
