Abstract This study experimentally investigates acoustic resonance in an in-line tube array, focusing on identifying the periodic flow structures responsible for exciting acoustic resonance and exploring passive control techniques to mitigate flow-induced acoustic resonance. The dominant Strouhal periodicities which contribute to acoustic resonance excitation in the in-line tube array and the maximum acoustic pressure generated at resonance are experimentally measured prior to introducing any suppression technique. The results show that introducing small control cylinders and passive jets effectively reduces sound pressure levels by more than 30 dB under resonance conditions. The study also highlights that the locations and number of control techniques significantly influence their effectiveness in suppressing acoustic resonance. These findings provide valuable insights into designing and implementing passive noise control strategies for in-line tube arrays in diverse industrial applications.
