Abstract
Since 2014, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Russian officials have made concerted efforts to create a patriotic narrative that underscores Russia’s valuable role in the war. As part of this narrative, in 2014 Russia unveiled its Monument to the Heroes of the First World War in Moscow; since 2014 revisions have been made to middle and high school history textbooks, and various writings suitable for a general audience have been published that aim to promote a patriotic account of Russia’s wartime experiences. Though it has been widely noted that monuments and texts remain central to forming a specific perception of a nation, scholars have yet to examine the Monument to the Heroes of the First World War and written accounts working in tandem to impart a new understanding of the war to a broad segment of Russian society. The author concludes that the monument and the printed sources craft a patriotic interpretation of Russia’s wartime actions and that such an emphasis reflects the current government’s efforts to create the image of a resilient, strong, and determined Russia.
