Depuis les années 1970, la recherche sur l’imprimé populaire au Québec a fait des pas de géants. L’objectif de cet article consiste d’abord à cerner les acquis dans ce champ au cours des 50 dernières années. Ce portrait nous permet ensuite de proposer trois pistes à creuser, dans une perspective holistique qui soutient qu’après avoir étudié l’imprimé populaire pour lui-même, il importe désormais de le mettre en relation avec l’ensemble de la production littéraire québécoise dite légitime. Par la démonstration du rapport dialectique qui unit les romans fasciculaires publiés par les Éditions Police-Journal dans l’après-guerre et le circuit des oeuvres canoniques, cet article entérine le postulat de Marc Angenot selon lequel « paralittérature » et littérature ne peuvent exister l’une sans l’autre.
