Pioneering Feminist Realism in Minna Canth’s <i>Työmiehen Vaimo</i> [<i>The Worker’s Wife</i>] (1885)

Abstract
This article introduces Finnish playwright and women’s rights activist Minna Canth and her play The Worker’s Wife to an English-language audience and assesses existing scholarship about Canth and the play. Early criticism of Canth’s work established a tradition of understanding her political plays, such as The Worker’s Wife, as lacking in artistic merit, particularly in comparison to the works of Henrik Ibsen, who is often positioned as Canth’s literary mentor. I suggest that the artistic value of Canth’s political plays should be re-evaluated and argue that The Worker’s Wife is an innovative example of nineteenth-century feminist political playwriting that pioneers feminist realist dramaturgy and politics unique in the Finnish context.
