Abstract

The purpose of this knowledge-through-practice project was to deepen and add to the research on the relationship between dance and music. Inspired by a Foucauldian perspective, this artistic project aimed to challenge how music is commonly used in Western concert dance and to develop instant interdisciplinary interaction between dance and music. Empirical material consisted of collaborative in-studio movement exploration, reflective journals, and video documentation. This artistic research resulted in five prompts that can help progress dance and music improvisation to interdisciplinary artistic dialogue and develop shared vocabulary and collaboration techniques. With these findings, this study encourages instant and mutual interaction between dance and music, practices for multidisciplinary collaboration, new insights into musicality, and the consideration of sociocultural perspectives in dance practices. As such, this study offers interdisciplinary dimensions for well-rounded dance practices, supporting and contributing to dancer wellness.
