Abstract
Bellifontains doivent s'interroger sur le destinataire du médaillon ornant la façade : un écrivain illustre, un architecte renommé ou un peintre de l'école de Barbizon ? Les observateurs attentifs remarqueront que ce médaillon est dédié à Paul Merwart, un peintre ayant oeuvré sous la Troisième République, dont le style se démarque de celui des peintres de Barbizon, bien qu'il ait fréquenté la forêt de Fontainebleau pour parfaire sa peinture de paysage et vécu occasionnellement en ville. Une courte rue porte même son nom. La vie de Paul Merwart est intimement liée à la forêt de Fontainebleau, tout comme sa mort. En 1906, ses cendres ont été scellées dans un médaillon de la caverne d'Augas. Initialement associé à un style classique, voire « pompier », il est ensuite devenu l'un des principaux représentants des peintres engagés par le ministère de la Marine et des colonies. C'est d'ailleurs dans l'exercice de ses fonctions qu'il a trouvé la mort. En 1902, Paul Merwart a péri dans la tragique éruption de la montagne Pelée en Martinique. Sa disparition est un témoignage éternel de son dévouement à son art et de sa volonté de capturer les phénomènes naturels. Son nom peut être évoqué aux côtés de celui de Pline l'Ancien, le savant romain, enseveli sous la lave du Vésuve pour avoir cherché à l'observer de trop près.
