Gender pronouns, duties of care, and queer and trans survival: A CRT counterstory of academic drag, teaching queer, and pedagogies of hope

Abstract
As a Critical Race Theory (CRT) counterstory in both method and genre, this article critically reflects on and qualitatively annotates transcripts from the 2024 Waterloo Staff Conference presentation “Gender Pronouns, Duties of Care, and Queer and Trans Survival.” Counterstory allows the authors to maintain the vibrancy and authenticity of the live, hybrid session in preserving the original orality now in prose while also connecting to and embodying the special issue’s themes and foci. The talk was part of UWaterloo’s commitment to (re)creating safe(r) campus spaces following a former-student’s gender-based terrorist attack of a Gender and Social Justice professor and students in June 2023. The talk itself, hosted by an academic drag queen alumn, showcased gender pronouns and higher education professionals’ responsibilities to increasingly ensure that our campuses are life-giving, not life-taking, for our students, for ourselves, and for each other.
