Abstract
Abstract This article reflects on the state of Women, Peace and Security ( WPS ) research after twenty-five years. To mark the silver anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution ( UNSCR ) 1325, which launched the global WPS agenda in 2000, we present an overview of the WPS research on norm adoption, implementation, and contestation, offering broader insights into the practical challenges of translating norms into practice. Starting with the inception of WPS norms, the article provides historical context on how the WPS agenda emerged, specifying the roles played by key actors at the local, national, and international levels. It also identifies the processes and hurdles that have characterized the WPS agenda in varied regional and institutional contexts, while delving into the feminist critiques that underpin scholarly debates. Feminist scholarship, we show, has been at the forefront of academic conversations on WPS , and we advocate for more theoretical pluralism as new pathways for research are charted.
