Abstract

This Special Issue is based on the papers selected for oral and poster presenta on during the 5 th European Symposium on Fire Safety Science (ESFSS). Following the last successful symposium held in Barcelona (Spain) in 2024, the fifth edition was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from September 3 rd to 5 th , 2025. The symposium series aims to gather researchers and other stakeholders to exchange ideas and discuss fire safety science and engineering. The symposium was organised and hosted by the Department for Fire-Safe Sustainable Built Environment (FRISSBE) at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Ins tute (ZAG). The ESFSS2025 Local Organising Committee was composed of Grunde Jomaas, Andrea Lucherini, Ulises Rojas Alva, Urška Blumauer, Aleš Jug, and Laetitia Marrot, supported by many other colleagues (Tamara Želimorski, Jonay Brito Garcia, Hishe Kahsay Negash, Clare a Janice Suwarna, Hibat Allah Labhiri, and Jawad Bashir Mustafvi). Approximately 100 contributions were received during the symposium preparation, including submissions for both oral and poster presentations. Following a rigorous peer-review and selection process involving at least two reviews for each submitted full paper, 40 contributions were accepted for oral presentation and 46 for poster presentation, with 35 of the latter dedicated to work-in-progress research. The symposium was attended by around 150 people from around the world, with representation from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The proceedings compile all the full papers presented in oral and poster formats during the three-day symposium, featuring three invited keynote speakers. The proceedings are organised into six main topics that are in line with the symposium program: • Material behaviour in fire (ignition, pyrolysis, heat transfer, flame spread, flammability, smoke production, smouldering, …) • Fire dynamics (fire plumes, compartment fires, tunnel fires, fire detection and suppression, facades, smoke transport, …) • Large outdoor fires (wildland fires, wildland-urban interface fires, urban conflagrations, …) • Structure-fire interactions (thermal and mechanical response of construction materials in fire, steel, concrete, timber and composite structures in fire, …) • Fire safety engineering (industrial fire safety, fire hazard, risk analysis, resilience, evacuation and human behaviour, performance-based design, fire forensics, …) • Fire safety and sustainability (bio-based materials, battery fires, electric vehicles, battery &amp; energy storage systems, solar panels, health and environmental considerations, fire emissions and toxicity, sustainability calculations, …) On behalf of the ESFSS2025 Local Organising Commitee, we would like to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions and participation in the symposium.
