Abstract: The review introduces a newly published musical setting of the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning by American Celius Dougherty (1902–1986), Eglantine and Ivy: Eight Sonnets from the Portuguese , the composer’s final song work. Two composers of the twenty-first century whose excellence as pianists and whose extraordinary love of language and place are introduced here: Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi’s song settings of Persian poetry, in English adaptation and in Persian, and a stand-alone cabaret piece by American composer Martin Hennessy.
