Abstract
The article attempts to trace the biographical path of one of the Muslim judges (qadi) in the Chechen society of Aukh – Dukai on the basis of fragmentary sources. Particular attention is paid to the regional aspect, namely the eastern areas of Chechen settlement – Aukh, which adjoined the Dagestani societies and domains. An important subject is the problem of the Muslim religion among the Chechens, which acted on the one hand as an ideological factor in the formation of the armed confrontation of the highlanders of the North Caucasus against Russia, on the other hand, a number of Muslim scholars of the Caucasus opposed the gazavat, and qadi Dukai was an example of a consistent loyal position in relations with Russia. A conclusion is made about the relatively broad support of qadi Dukai by his fellow tribesmen due to the peculiarities of the social structure of Chechen population.
