Abstract
The English language has a complex history and so our approaches to teaching it should also be nuanced. In Canada, English has been used as a tool for colonization; see, for example, Sarkar and Metallic (2009), for a detailed explanation of how colonial languages eroded Mi’gmaq language and culture through residential schooling and governmental integration practices. Today, the ability to use English well is a requirement to access education and employment, and thus presents a barrier to opportunities.
