Abstract
Liver transplantation is the only truly curative treatment option for end-stage liver disease and for some patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The number of potentially eligible patients greatly exceeds the number of deceased liver donors and among those patients selected to enter the liver transplant wait list, there is an ongoing risk of death before transplantation. Under such circumstances several approaches have been taken to objectively identify patients for transplantation to reduce the risks of wait list mortality.
