Implications of substance use among sexually diverse men in Mexico: insights from mobile app use

Abstract
This study examines the intersection of substance use, mobile app use, experiences of stigma, and coping mechanisms among gay, bisexual, non-normative sexual orientation, and queer (GBNSOQ) men residing in Mexico. Using a cross-sectional mixed-methods design, data from 477 participants were analyzed to explore substance use patterns, motivations, perceptions of stigma, safe consumption, and coping strategies. Results indicate that substance use is stigmatized both socially and within the GBNSOQ community. Mobile apps serve as critical tools for self-care during sexual encounters involving substance use and may promote harm reduction practices while strengthening community support networks. Findings from this study underscore the need for inclusive and affirming health care services and public policies that address intersectional forms of discrimination and promote health equity among GBNSOQ men in Mexico.
