On Fanon’s Politics of Trauma and Actionality: Rethinking Pathology and Agency

Abstract
This paper explores the underexamined concept of actionality in Frantz Fanon’s early work. I define actionality at the intersection of his phenomenology of action and critical psychiatry – as agency grounded in individual intentionality yet inseparable from collective liberation. I analyze how Fanon links actionality to a bodily schema unimpeded by trauma, arguing that despite its seeming impossibility under colonialism’s “pathology of freedom,” his psychopolitics allows for political agency emerging from social trauma. The paper concludes by assessing the limits of Fanon’s approach, drawing on feminist theory and Mad studies.
