Paru en 1965, 6 810 000 litres d’eau par seconde de Michel Butor poursuit le cycle d’études américaines inauguré par Mobile : hésitant entre le roman et la poésie, autour de la description des chutes du Niagara, il met en oeuvre une poétique de la choralité. Le texte mêle aussi bien la voix de Chateaubriand et de son voyage en Amérique que celles de personnages, jeunes et vieux, solitaires ou mariés, devenus les pèlerins modernes d’un lieu touristique représenté comme l’archétype de la civilisation capitaliste. Entre stéréophonie et stéréoscopie, la choralité de 6 810 000 litres d’eau par seconde prend la forme d’un grand phrasé qui illustre à sa manière l’épopée américaine chez Butor.
