Abstract
Abstract The Arab region is at the onset of a period similar to that of the tumultuous quarter century after the end of World War II. Now, as then, there are challenges to the legitimacy of state borders and domestic power structures, shifting regional alignments and cross-border threats, and political upheaval reflecting long-term socio-economic transformations. The narrative of sectarianism as the main driver of these dynamics has gained ground since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. The Syrian conflict since 2011 has helped make it dominant. But such narratives confuse appearances with causes. They oversimplify the social dynamics behind emerging political challenges, offering a poor guide to appropriate policy responses. The challenge to the existing system comes not from sectarianism but from three processes that have driven it over the past two decades or more. This chapter outlines those processes, offering an alternative explanation for the sectarianization of the region’s politics.
