Abstract
This article is written as an homage to Professor Jim Hogg’s contribution to the advancement of respiratory sciences. A brief history of the “discovery” of the small airways by Ewald Weibel and the contribution to pulmonary disease by Jim Hogg are described. Professor Hogg’s great role as an educator and “role model” is highlighted by the description of some of the work by his fellows. Research I did while working with Jim and some update of this work illustrating the long-term impact on the field is discussed. His role as a master minder of the small airways and revival of interest in the early phases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are emphasized. Finally, the personal strengths and great humility that made Jim a great model are highlighted.
