Update on knowledge of Mallochiola gagates (McAtee & Malloch, 1924) in Canada (Hemiptera: Microphysidae)

Abstract
Microphysidae are a small family of tiny true bugs (1.5–3 mm) (Hemiptera) encompassing about 30 extant species worldwide (Schuh & Slater, 1995; Blinn, 2011; Henry, 2017; Yasunaga & Yamada, 2017). Seven species are recorded from North America, two of which are native to the Nearctic: *Chinaola quercicola* Blatchley and *Mallochiola gagates* (McAtee & Malloch). The five other species are introduced and have a Palearctic origin: *Loricula* *bipunctata* (Perris), *L. coleoptrata* (Fallén), *L. elegantula* (Baerensprung), *L. exilis* (Fallén), and *L. pselaphiformis* Curtis (Kelton, 1980, 1981; Schwartz, 1989; Maw et al., 2000; Scudder & Foottit, 2006; Wheeler et al., 2008; Théry, 2022). *Mallochiola gagates* was first described in the genus *Idiotropus* Fieber based on several female specimens from the USA (Plummer’s Island, Maryland; Washington, District of Columbia) and Mexico (Tampico), collected in 1903, 1905 and 1908 (McAtee & Malloch, 1924). The species was subsequently transferred to the genus *Mallochiola* by Bergroth in 1925. The species was not officially mentioned again until 2011, citing collections made in Tennessee in 2001 (two males and two females) and in North Carolina in 2010 (one female) (Blinn, 2011). The species is also known from Ontario, Canada, although these data have not been published (J. Kits and S. Paiero, pers. com.). Two specimens were collected on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron in 2010, and two others in Norfolk County (one in Turkey Point Provincial Park and one near Walsingham) in 2011 (GBIF, 2025). All these specimens (three females and one male, S. Paiero pers. com.) are held in the University of Guelph Insect Collection, Ontario, Canada (DEBU). We here present three female specimens recently collected in flight interception traps in the province of Quebec.
