Abstract
A Jovial Crew ou The Merry Beggars est la dernière comédie de Richard Brome. À la veille de la fermeture des théâtres en 1642, cette pièce offre à son auteur une ultime occasion de mettre en scène son thème de prédilection, la mélancolie, mais aussi le procédé qu’il affectionne et maîtrise si habilement, le théâtre dans le théâtre. Le but, clairement annoncé, de la pièce enchâssée est de divertir le spectateur fictif, qui souffre de mélancolie. Mais le divertir est-elle la seule visée ? Il s’avère qu’il existe un autre but, bien plus important, mais qui demeure ineffable.
