Abstract
Abstract This entry explores the history and current status of eugenic thought and practices. First, the early history of eugenics and its ascendance in the early twentieth century is explored, particularly in Britain. Second, eugenics in North America (the United States and Canada), Nazi Germany, and other nations is examined. The focus is on sterilization policies in various US states as well as on eugenic ideals being incorporated in Nazi “racial hygiene” targeting groups considered a threat to the health of the body politics ( Volkskörper ). The entry concludes with a brief look at current issues, including a reemergence of eugenics in “newgenics.” Far from being irrelevant, concerns about eugenic thinking reemerge in the potential of genetic information being used in mate selection, employment, medical decisions, or for insurance, credit, and financial purposes, and to inform policies in areas such as immigration and assisted reproduction.
