Abstract
Abstract Community activism for environmental health takes many forms, but at its core, it involves individuals working together to address environmental risks to health. These include physical, chemical, biological, and ecological risks and, increasingly, the complex consequences of climate change. This activism has included not only local efforts (e.g., protesting unhealthy workplaces and polluting facilities) but also action in relation to global environmental health threats such as climate change and persistent organic pollutants. In doing this, individuals pool their knowledge, resources, networks, and social capital, forming a stronger voice to take on established power structures such as industry, lobby groups, or governments. Racialized groups, Indigenous communities, women, and youth have played important roles in addressing longstanding inequities in environmental health in their communities. New digital technologies present opportunities and risks to these and other activist groups, illustrating the ever‐evolving nature of community activism for environmental health.
