Abstract
Abstract Osteopathy was created in the United States during the 1870s by Andrew Taylor Still (1828–1917), a disenchanted regular physician. In the early twentieth century, it began to diffuse to other Anglophone countries, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, and later to other countries, including non‐Western ones. While osteopathy started out as primarily a manual medical system, and remains so in most countries, it evolved during the twentieth century in the United States and some Canadian provinces into osteopathic medicine and surgery, with a scope of practice that parallels allopathic medical practitioners. This entry discusses the profession of osteopathy, including its sociohistorical development, dynamic processes of professionalization, and the conflicts related to professional boundaries that continue to shape its sociological contours in the contemporary health landscape.
