Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

ECR Spotlight is a series of interviews with early-career authors from a selection of papers published in Journal of Experimental Biology and aims to promote not only the diversity of early-career researchers (ECRs) working in experimental biology but also the huge variety of animals and physiological systems that are essential for the ‘comparative’ approach. Keoni Chong is an author on ‘ Navigating turbulence: the effects of eddy size on the swimming performance of walleye (Sander vitreus) larvae’, published in JEB. Keoni conducted the research described in this article while an MSc graduate student in Josef Ackerman's lab at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Keoni is now an Aquatic Research Biologist in the lab of Yingming Zhao at the Ministry of Natural Resources – Science and Research Branch, Wheatley, Ontario, Canada, investigating how fish interact with their environment during vulnerable early life stages, and how these interactions shape their habitat use, behaviour and population dynamics.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
