Abstract
It's all connected: cognitive function is increasingly recognized as the outcome of inter-organ communication, rather than purely brain-intrinsic processes.A dynamic physiological network spanning skeletal muscle, liver, adipose tissue and the vasculature continuously exchanges metabolic and molecular signals that shape neural health, plasticity and resilience.This special issue of The Journal of Physiology, 'Beyond neural connections: tissue crosstalk and cognitive health and function' , presents a curated collection of reviews, perspectives, research articles, letters and journal club contributions that explore how tissue crosstalk supports cognition across the lifespan.Together, these 24 contributions redefine brain health as a whole-body concept, challenging traditional boundaries between neuroscience and integrative physiology.
