Hemp as a Sustainable Solution for Climate Crisis Action and the Opportunities and Implications for Indigenous Communities: A Review of Literature

Abstract
Indigenous youth are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. Researchers at the Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health engaged with approximately 200 Indigenous youth in Tkaronto, Ontario, Turtle Island through talking circles and surveys about the impacts of the climate crisis on youth mental health and exploring possible solutions; connection to land, sustainability, and taking further action were amongst some of major themes that arose. With the guidance of Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers alongside youth, industrial hemp was identified as a potential avenue to implement Land-based programming through a long-term solutions approach. This literature review explores current uses of industrial hemp highlighted in both academic and grey literature, specific case examples, and the feasibility and sustainability of industrial hemp.
