NIR-NUV Observations of Ice Deposition on Planetary Regolith Simulants

Abstract
Spectroscopic measurements of ice deposition on lunar and martian regolith simulants (JSC-1A and JSC Mars-1) were collected at wavelengths between 200-1000 nm under simulated Mars surface conditions. The slope of the ratio between the ice-covered surface and the ice-free surface between 350-550 nm is predictive of the amount and/or purity of ice present on the surface, a result that is verified by performing the same analysis on ice observations from the Phoenix Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The method is particularly sensitive to the presence of thin frosts and is more efficient than other spectral methods of determining the presence of ice, requiring measurements at only two wavelengths between 350 and 550 nm.
