Key Messages: (1) Microorganisms play a key role in the lithification of carbonate sediments in the Red Sea by facilitating micritic cementation in different environmental contexts and can be independent of water depth or light penetration. (2) The Al Wajh carbonate platform in the northeastern Red Sea is an example of the influence of microbially induced precipitation and a potential analogue for land-attached platforms of the past.
