“Not Quite Muslim Enough?”: Black African Muslims and the Politics of Belonging in Muslim Spaces in Montreal, Canada
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This article examines how Black African Muslims in Montreal, Quebec, navigate exclusion and negotiate belonging within predominantly Arab Muslim spaces. Drawing on in-depth interviews and ethnographic data, it shows how linguistic barriers, particularly the dominance of Arabic, and racial hierarchies rooted in colonial legacies, create obstacles to full participation. Participants recounted being marginalized in prayer spaces, excluded from leadership roles, and dismissed due to their cultural and linguistic identities. While some sought inclusion through language learning or piety, others established parallel mosques reflecting African traditions and languages. Using a postcolonial lens on belonging, this study reveals how faith-based unity is undermined by racial and linguistic boundaries. It highlights the creative strategies Black African Muslims employ to claim religious and communal legitimacy in a context that often devalues their ways of being Muslim.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.

machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
