Abstract
Escalating social and ecological crises are driving the need for business to transition from merely minimizing harm to fostering positive societal and environmental outcomes. At the leading edge is regenerative business scholarship, which aligns strategic goals with socio-ecological flourishing. While this nascent field has redefined business strategy, it has yet to explore how allocations of ownership and governance rights influence the success of regenerative strategy. We argue that allocating these property rights to employees supports the implementation of regenerative strategy by enabling stakeholder knowledge acquisition, strengthening internal governance, supporting long-term planning, and fostering socio-ecological stewardship. In bridging scholarship on regenerative strategy with organizational democracy, we generate important new insights on how alternative ownership and governance rights can help business generate the positive externalities required to address urgent social and environmental problems.
