New Kid on the Block: Project-Specific Psychological Ownership Fuels Employee Entrepreneur Identity

Abstract
Project-based work is now ubiquitous in our organizations. We uncover that employees can develop an as-yet unrecognized project-specific psychological ownership by undertaking project-based work. Existing research remains contested regarding whether psychological ownership facilitates entrepreneurship. We uncover a novel mechanism that addresses this debate. Through a multi-case-based analysis of employees in China, we uncover a process whereby employees’ project-specific psychological ownership fuels the formation of their entrepreneur identity, spurring the likelihood that they leave their organization to start their own ventures.
