Diversity Logic and Technological Representation in the TMTs of Firms Developing Radical New Systems

Abstract
This study adopts a sociomaterial lens to investigate the effects of technological schemata in top management teams (TMTs) on the performance of firms developing radical new systems. A diversity logic within the TMT—diverse technological schemata obtained through industry experience—had positive effects on the profitability of firms in the computer systems industry from 1977 to 2007. Technological frames derived from experience in computer software industries also had positive effects. Even relatively brief exposures to technological schemata through non-dominant industry backgrounds contributed to these effects. A theoretical framework and empirical findings contribute to research on innovation and management’s role in that process by shedding light on the positive effects that technological frames in the TMT can have on firm performance and explaining why— through actor-network-theory.
