Mental Health and Food Insecurity Among Adult Applicants for Subsidized Housing

Abstract
Current literature suggests that experiencing food and housing insecurity concurrently may be associated with cumulative, adverse mental health effects. In the current study, linear and binary logistic regression analyses were used to analyze cross-sectional data from individuals on a publicly subsidized housing waitlist. The results indicated that food insecurity was positively associated with psychological distress and depressive symptoms but was negatively associated with odds of reporting a mental health diagnosis. These findings highlight the mental health challenges faced by subsidized housing applicants and support exploring interventions to mitigate food and housing insecurity in order to address these challenges.
