“I Still Love my Country”: Supporting the Social Integration of Recent Immigrant-Origin Students Through Drawing and Philosophical Dialogue
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This article explores the potential of Philosophy for Children (P4C) to support the social integration of first- and second-generation immigrant students. It presents a portion of the results of a study that took place in 2023 in a Montréal primary school. The results, based on students’ drawings, philosophical dialogues conducted with the class, and interviews with the students and their teacher, suggest that P4C activities combining drawing with group dialogue can enable immigrant-origin students to explore questions related to identity and belonging and to make connections between their experiences and those of other students. Based on these results, I propose that the Ministry of Education integrate P4C activities incorporating creative expression into the pedagogical approaches recommended for supporting the integration of recent immigrant-origin students in Quebec.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
