Abstract
Alice Munro, the renowned Canadian short story writer, wrote little about the challenges of literary creation. In her work, however, it is possible to find stories that engage with this very issue, offering compelling insights into the artistic process and the material from which fiction is crafted. Beyond a brief commentary on stories that explicitly address the theme – such as “Material”, from the collection Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You (2011), and “The Photographer”, from Lives of Girls and Women (2014) – this essay seeks to explore a more ambiguous subject: the relationship her narratives establish with the act of looking, suggesting that something may be said here about the artist’s gaze – its powers, its risks, its pains. These reflections are grounded in Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura, closely linked to the way it is inscribed in the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, particularly in certain poems from As flores do mal (2019).
