September erreichte uns die traurige Nachricht, dass Professor Balfour Mount im Alter von 86 Jahren auf der Palliativstation des Royal Victoria Hospitals in Montreal (CA) verstorben ist. Man kann annehmen, dass es sein Wunschsterbeort war. 50 Jahre zuvor gründete er dort den weltweit ersten innerklinischen Palliativdienst. Balfour Mount gilt als „Vater der Palliativmedizin“ in Nordamerika und sogar international. Zeitgenosse und früher Anhänger der Vision von Cicely Saunders, prägte er den Begriff „Palliative Care” anstelle von „Hospice Care”, der als Begriff des britischen Modells kulturell nur schwer für die französischsprachige Gesellschaft Kanadas zu übersetzen war. Die Mängel in der Sterbebegleitung im Krankenhaus erkennend, wurde es zu seiner Vision, Palliativversorgung in die Klinik zu holen und allen Patientinnen und Patienten Zugang zu ganzheitlicher medizinischer Versorgung zu verschaffen. Er wurde 1990 Direktor von ‚McGill Palliative Care‘ und gründete 1999 das ‚McGill Program in Integrated Whole Person Care‘. Zahlreich sind die nationalen und internationalen Ehren, die ihm für sein Lebenswerk zuteilwurden, besonders stolz war er auf die Aufnahme in den ‚Order of Canada‘ (1985) und spätere Erhebung zum ‚Officer of the Order of Canada‘ (2003), eine Art Ritterschlag. Daneben war Balfour Mount Träger des ‚National Order of Quebec‘ und erhielt Ehrendoktorwürden der University of Calgary, der Queen’s University und der Dalhousie University in Kanada. Balfour Mount war auch AYA (Adolescent and Young Adults) with Cancer als es den Begriff noch gar nicht gab. Er war auch Patient mit Krebs. Er war auch Urologe. Und das mag Teil seiner Motivation gewesen sein, seinen späteren Arbeitsfokus auf Selbstfürsorge zu legen, klinisch praktisch Tätige darauf vorzubereiten wie sie angesichts von Leid, achtsam mit sich sein sollten. Für die heutige Praxis der Palliativ- und Hospizversorgung war das Wirken von Balfour Mount von grundlegender und maßgeblicher Bedeutung. Sein Tod wird die Palliativ-Community weltweit zusammenbringen, um über seinen einzigartigen Beitrag zu unserer Arbeit nachzudenken und seine Vision in Erinnerung zu behalten, die Versorgung von Patientinnen und Patienten mit unheilbaren Erkrankungen, die unzureichend behandelt werden, ganzheitlich zu verbessern.
