Ethnic and Religious Identity Formation in Emerging Adulthood: The Role of Intergroup Dialogue in Divided and Multicultural Societies

Abstract
Emerging adulthood is a formative stage for ethnic and religious identity formation, especially in multicultural and socially divided contexts. Despite extensive research on identity, there is limited understanding of how emerging adults manage complex intergroup environments (Shamoa-Nir, 2021; 2024a; 2024b; 2024c). This study examines the role of structured and voluntary intergroup dialogue in identity formation, emphasizing self-reflection, and adaptation to sociocultural expectations. Findings suggest  that participation in dialogue enhances intercultural understanding and facilitates the integration of ethnic and religious identities . By providing an integrative perspective on the social dynamics that occur in intergroup dialogue within divided societies, this research advances knowledge on how emerging adults construct coherent identities while engaging with diverse social groups.
