XIX. ve XX. yüzyıllarda pek çok coğrafyada din ve mezhep temelli demografik yapıda önemli değişimler yaşanmıştır. Bu değişimlerde misyonerlik faaliyetlerinin etkisi olmuştur. XIX. yüzyılın sonunda ekonomik sıkıntılar yaşayan Harput, misyonerler tarafından önemli bir vilayet merkezi haline getirilmiştir. Şark vilayetlerindeki Ermeni Meselesi ve Rus politikaları, bölgede misyonerlik faaliyetlerinin artmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Bu durum, Protestan nüfusun artmasına neden olmuş ve sonuç olarak ABD'ye göçler artmıştır. ABD, Harput’tan gelen bu göçlerle önemli bir emek gücü elde etmiştir. Bu durum, ABD’nin geçmişte uyguladığı koloni politikalarıyla da benzerlik göstermiştir. Hem emek gücü hem de mezhepsel anlamda, ABD’deki Harputlu Ermeniler önemli bir güç haline gelmiştir. Protestanlığın etkisiyle artan göçler, ABD’deki Ermeni topluluklarının güçlenmesini sağlamış ve güçlü bir kamuoyu oluşturarak Ermeni meselesinin gündeme gelmesine önemli ölçüde katkıda bulunmuştur. Osmanlı Devleti bu göçleri engellemeye çalışsa da başarılı olamamış, arşiv kaynaklarındaki bulgular sonucunda da ABD’deki Ermeni göçleri hakkında daha detaylı araştırmalar yapma ihtiyacı doğmuştur.
