L’espace réflexif qu’ouvre pour Annie Ernaux, depuis 1982, son journal d’écriture, s’apparente selon elle à un « lieu noir » dans lequel il lui arrive d’éprouver la sensation de tourner en rond. Si cet « atelier sans lumière » prend le risque d’exposer aux regards la « peine » qui en motive les ressassements, il détermine implicitement ce que cet article nomme « une topique de l’écriture », dont les implications débordent l’oeuvre ernausienne pour concerner toutes celles et tous ceux qui, écrivant, cherchent à être conscients de leurs gestes et ménagent des espaces qui ne sont autres que l’atelier de l’écriture . L’étude se propose de lire L’atelier noir (2011) non dans la perspective de l’oeuvre publiée, dans la dépendance rétrospective de ce qui, finalement, aura pris forme, mais per se : dans l’idée que s’éprouve là une dynamique prospective indépendante où se dit au plus près le geste poïétique. Ainsi, dans une perspective simultanément poïétique et générative, l’analyse fait le pari que l’« atelier noir » d’Ernaux modélise l’atelier de l’écrivain en général, mais aussi, par le souci constant du journal « d’expliquer la quête » et « les outils de la recherche », d’exposer la « méthode », propose des repères à qui engage une démarche de recherche-création en littérature.
