Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à La tragédie de Ravaillac des frères Jean et Jérôme Tharaud, oeuvre novatrice mais méconnue qui illustre une tendance littéraire visant à réinventer le roman historique à la veille de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce roman offre une problématisation de l’histoire reposant sur la psychologie du meurtrier, décrit comme une victime de sa vulnérabilité profonde et de son incapacité à comprendre les enjeux politiques de son temps. Il se distingue par l’évacuation du romanesque et du pittoresque qui caractérisent le roman historique de son époque. Le dépaysement s’effectue par l’exploration du monde intérieur de Ravaillac. Dans un style minimaliste et objectif qui aspire à l’exactitude, La tragédie de Ravaillac , peu immersif, laisse une grande place aux questions sans réponses auxquelles se heurtent les Tharaud, qui tentent de proposer une nouvelle manière de représenter le passé par la fiction, un roman historique nouveau, débarrassé de l’héritage des auteurs populaires du xix e siècle.
